| LaundryESP® is a cost-effective and flexible program designed to raise the environmental performance of textile service and supply companies and improve relations with customers. The program allows large and small companies alike to choose from a variety of initiatives that each participant can tailor to its operations. Performance will be reported on an industry-wide basis. All participating companies can contribute to the overall success of the program. LaundryESP's success also depends on a strong alliance between the associations, laundries, customers and suppliers. The program includes a statement of environmental principles, a set of program goals, a menu of voluntary initiatives, and marketing promotions.
What is the program's strategic goal? The primary goal of LaundryESP is to facilitate the textile service and supply industry's continued commitment to environmental protection through the use of new and innovative approaches. LaundryESP is designed to build on the industry's existing strengths of recycling and reusability and its more efficient use of resources (water, energy and wash chemicals) when compared to home laundering.
What are the program's specific environmental and conservation goals? LaundryESP set the following industry-wide resource conservation and pollutant reduction goals in 1999.
A 10-25% reduction in the gallons of water used per pound of textiles laundered.
A 10-25% reduction in energy consumption per pound of textiles laundered.
A 10-25% substitution of environmentally beneficial washroom chemical formulations.
A significant reduction in pollutant equivalents discharged to sewers.
These goals, as evaluated through 2002 and based on a 1997 baseline, have been met.
The program and its participants are currently evaluating the creation of new goals.
